What: Carpenters Ltd - a 19th century local brewery

Then: At the time, beer was generally brewed in the area of consumption - Stroud had five breweries! Carpenters was noted for its fine ales and good labour relations
Now: Carpenters closed in 1926, following a series of mergers. One of its buildings became Coronation Hall - in 2011 there were plans to convert it into apartments

In the 19th century, Carpenters Ltd. was the local Cainscross Brewery. At that time, most beer was brewed in the area of consumption - Stroud had five breweries. Carpenters was noted for its fine ales and good labour relations.

During the 20th century, a series of mergers resulted in the emergence of large firms and the closure of many small breweries. Carpenters closed in 1926, when the buildings were sold off, one of them later becoming the Coronation Hall.
