Originally part of the Painswick parish, by 1894, Uplands had became a suburb of Stroud. Historically, Uplands was made up of several large estates, which as time went on were sold for development.
A new council estate was built near Folly Lane in the 1920s, followed by further developments along the Lane and Peghouse Rise.
