It is not known how or when the house acquired its name, but a tradesman's token of the time of King Charles II has "Henry Allen of the" on one side and "Castel in Stroud" on the other, which suggests it may have been an inn of that name at one time. The name must refer to the mock castellated towers in front of it. After Fisher’s death, his son Charles, an eminent hawking expert, lived there.
