Before the Cainscross road was built in 1825, access to the house was along a long drive off the Stroud-Paganhill road. The house was lived in by the Withey family, prominent High Street grocers, and in the 20th century by Josiah Stephens, a hop merchant.

In the 1960s there was a municipal refuse tip north of the house. It is now surrounded by a 20th century housing development.
