From the mid 16th century to the mid 19th century, clothiers sent their cloth by pack horse or wagon to agents or 'factors' in London and Southampton.

The factor would sell the cloth on commission. Cloth was sold at Blackwell Hall, London, to places such as Turkey and the Far East.
