The Stroud branch of McDonalds was opened in 2003. The opening was delayed for many years by protests from a large group of Stroud residents.

For many years before the new building was built, the site was neglected, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, there were extensive gardens here. It is thought that the name 'Merrywalks' may derive from the pleasant views these gardens offered passers by.
