Then: Built as a coaching Inn in 1870, the hotel survived the competitive popularity of the George Inn
Now: Still in use today

The Imperial Hotel was built by Benjamin Bucknall in 1870, and quickly superseded the Royal George as the leading hotel in the town. In 1890, the hotel was described as "very imposing...its internal arrangements and decorations are a credit to the town".
